Our MISSION

Mica's main aim is to enable independent Hardware and DIY stores to compete with the larger chain stores such as B&Q and Homebase.

Mica is a vehicle for growth within independent retail. We are owned by our members, who are all store owners, and are officially designated as a co-operative. This of course means that nobody is creaming off the profits from your hard work. All monies, after administrative costs, are ploughed back into the membership, either through investment in the company or rebates/dividends to the members.

Grow with MICA

Millions of Mica consumer leaflets are distributed throughout the UK every year, targeting customers by post code sector and attracting them to their local Mica store.

By joining Mica, you can attach your store to these national advertising campaigns. If it's evidence of growth you're looking for, look at the examples to the left, each showing an existing independent store's turnover in the first 4 years after joining the group. It really does work!

There is not a huge huge buy in the join, unlike other industry organisations, nor do we have targets for spend which must be reached to maintain membership or rebates.

Mica wants a strong, long term relationship with its members, large or small, and we don't believe that the best way to foster a relationship is by insisting on certain levels of spending or fees for the right to remain a part of the group. The only ongoing fee you pay is for your Bira membership, which doesn't go to us as we are part of the wider Bira group and this brings you a host of benefits all members gain by being part of the wider British Independent Retailers Association family.

So, how are we funded then? Mica can and could only exist with member support. Our funding stream is a small rebate received from all Mica suppliers on member purchases. They do this for the extra business being an approved supplier to Mica brings them - this does not affect terms that members receive. As you can imagine, this means that Mica HQ runs a fairly tight ship to give maximum value for money, subsidised promotions and rebates to our members, who are its only shareholders.
