Our HISTORY
Although Mica was originally launched in South Africa in 1984, it was first set up in the UK in 1994 by a group of like-minded retailers bravely stepping forward to test the concept.
The idea of being a co-operative quickly proved successful, and popular, and the group rapidly gained members spanning the length and width of the UK. Today they come from as far apart as the Shetlands Isles, London and Northern Ireland. We also have a contingent in each part of the United Kingdom and are stores are spread across every region.
As the group grew, its buying and marketing power did so too, allowing Mica members to enjoy better pricing and higher quality, but with cheaper advertising (by the economies of scale).
Mica is now a co-operative. This means that each member gets a co-operative voting share, with '1 Member 1 Vote' applying to to all decisions on the direction of the company. It also means that its chairman, deputy and majority of board are independent hardware/DIY store owners like yourself and are voted into place by their fellow Mica Members.
The face of Mica has also changed a lot over the years, you can see the evolution of our logo and theme in the graphics above.
Although our history is the making of us as a group, we are always looking ahead to help improve the Mica experience and bring a productive and prosperous future to all of our Members.
